The Abyss: The Beer, The Rock Star

When Deschutes released its much-anticipated 2009 version of its wildly popular Imperial Stout, The Abyss, in Portland earlier this month, an uninformed observer might have thought that Mick Jagger was buying a round for everybody inside.

At least 200 fans lined up around the building, many waiting more than an hour in the crisp November chill, for a chance to buy the limited amounts allowed in bottles.

Because of a weird set of circumstances, I was able to sneak inside before the rush and capture some of the event as it unfolded. And I even fought the urge to take a sip of that wonderful nectar, but I waited all those other patient beer fans who had been waiting for so long got theirs first. It was the right thing to do.

Without further adieu, The Abyss:

The Abyss

I am beyond jealous. Can’t get Deschutes here in South Carolina. I live vicariously through you.

I randomly came across it on tap in Seattle yesterday – very good! I had my first bottle of Abyss last winter (an 08). A well done imperial stout!
